Choosing Love

Choosing Love

In this risky existence
where even trained dancers
stumble in mid-flight
and fall,
how shall our clumsy feet
find a hold
on slippery, steep walls?
Analysis and research
on the nature of concrete or stone
shall not reveal the passage
nor yield precise images
of simple, accurate climb.

On a high wire, the lover moves
with splendid, easy grace
balancing in blue space,
leaping in ecstasy of living,
of being, of becoming,
through all the loops
of numbers and seasons;
sees the multiple world –
pebble, moth or tree –
with sharp, clear sight;
but clearer still,
more closely, tenderly held,
sees people, and shares
the ancient, human path
with others in her likeness.

Stretched on the cross-poles
of certain death,
she dances on the high wire,
above, beyond walls,
and hears neither toll
nor warning,
but life racing through her veins
with timeless speed;
and aches with the delight
of being human:
every Adam, every Eve
summoned by God’s word
through perils and tests
to grip reality,
to choose love.
